EPILOGUE: The Great Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon, in the Bag
As race director of the Great Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon for the past seven seasons, Patty Spector [originally featured in “Amazing Race” by Amanda Rae Busch, September 2006; featured again in the August 2009 issue’s “Backbone” on p. 112] finds herself with piles upon piles of logo T-shirts left over from the hundreds handed out to racers, sponsors, and volunteers each year.
Seizing a smart repeat-marketing opportunity, Spector drove past thrift store drop-offs and instead partnered with Marcia Powdermaker of Green for a Change, a group of environmentally minded activists in southern Berkshire, to stitch the shirts into simple, reusable shopping bags.
These limited-edition Josh Bags are available for free at farmers’ markets in Lenox and Great Barrington, Massachusetts, until they’re all snatched up. And after this year’s race on Sunday, September 13—the thirty-third annual—you might consider returning your keepsake cotton back to the cause to create a more practical souvenir. [AUGUST 2009]
