Designed nearly three decades ago, the R.W. Wise Berkshire Collection captures the timeless nature of our local landscape. The series of pendant necklaces, earrings, and rings, hand-cast in solid 18-karat gold or sterling silver from original models made at the chic atelier in Lenox, Massachusetts, have become collector items of sorts.

“They don’t really represent, generally, what we do—they are sort of unsophisticated, if you will,” says president and graduate gemologist Richard W. Wise, but they certainly represent the Berkshires. “Let’s face it,” says Wise, “what do we have here? We’ve got trees.”

The three varying silhouettes of the symbolic branching plants—based on the folkloric Shaker Tree of Life—have become popular among women and men alike; many have been known to acquire the simple yet classy emblems for themselves or family members over a period of years.

“Like the tree of life,” says Wise, “they should last for generations.” [NOV/DEC 2009]
