George Cochrane finds an unlikely assistant for his new graphic novel--his six-year-old daughter, Fiamma

Stories and drawings by Brooklyn-based artist George Cochrane and his six-year-old daughter, Fiamma, are the inspiration for Long Time Gone, a new graphic novel about the creative process.

Incorporating themes from literary classics ranging from John Milton’s Paradise Lost to James Joyce’s Ulysses, with echoes of contemporary culture including Bob Dylan lyrics and Sunday comics, the tome depicts one twenty-four-hour period, divided into twenty-four chapters, beginning with Fiamma’s early morning nightmare and ending, finally, with Cochrane’s dreams the next night.

An exhibition of original artwork from the first two chapters of the project opens at MASS MoCA on May 23 and will remain on view throughout the summer. (MAY 2009)
