CLICK PICK: Pay It Forward

’Tis the season of giving, and no one knows more about that than those involved with the Berkshire Co-Act: Community Organizing for Action, a nonprofit grassroots organization focused on creating new approaches to community development and engagement.
The Co-Act website shares crucial information about the Food Net, an initiative dedicated to the food security and nutritional needs of various pantries and meal sites of the central and southern Berkshires. Through a network of local farmers and community and private gardens, Co-Act is able to provide thousands of pounds of fresh, organic produce annually to those in need.
The site also details the organization’s various other projects, including the Energy Net, which investigates hydroelectricity and other clean-energy options in the region; the Berkshire Currency Net, aimed toward strengthening a local currency like BerkShares; the Berkshire TimeBank, a labor pool in which participants exchange time as an alternative to money; and a monthly community forum.
Visitors to the site can learn how to get involved—whether by joining one of the networks, attending a forum, or making an online donation. Supporting your community—and spreading some holiday cheer—is just a mouse click away. [NOV/DEC 2010]
