Sweet new snacks at the Chef's Shop

Shoppers are finding more than just cutting-edge kitchen tools at the Chef’s Shop on Railroad Street in Great Barrington, Mass.—home bakers-turned-businesswomen Sherri Gorelick and Wendy Weinberg are putting the store’s single-oven demo kitchen to use, churning out freshly baked, bite-size cupcakes.

The duo launched Barrington Bites in April, and tasters can’t seem to get enough of the thirty-plus flavors, which span from impressively rich pure-vanilla, Southern red velvet, and chocolate-chai to Key lime, caramel apple (apple cider cupcake with caramel buttercream and roasted walnuts), and the Elvis (chocolate-banana cake with peanut butter frosting and crumbled bacon), not to mention vegan chocolate-orange-spice, gluten-free ginger, and flourless chocolate soufflé. Pumpkin, maple, gingerbread, and eggnog varieties herald the holidays; wildcard experiments are usually in the works on any given day.

“It harks to childhood,” says Gorelick, who hopes to expand the retail-order operation to wholesale eventually, thanks to the fledgling company’s built-in market research. “We want people to have one or two bites and be satisfied. People are always happy to see us.” [NOV/DEC 2010]
