As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare & Company
[LENOX, Mass.] William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet will grace the stage next summer at Shakespeare & Company’s Founders’ Theatre, along with the return of the hilarious The Hound of the Baskervilles, for the company’s thirty-fourth season, opening May 27, 2011, and running through March 25, 2012. Tina Packer’s Women of Will; a comedy titled The Memory of Water; and Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins will be produced in the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre.Artistic director Tony Simotes will direct the pastoral As You Like It with Merritt Janson (Desdemona in Othello in 2008 and 2009 and Viola/Cesario in Twelfth Night in 2009) taking the role of Rosalind. Simotes will also be at the helm for The Hound of the Baskervilles, a riotous comedy that will feature the three actors who made it such a success in 2009: Jonathan Croy, Josh Aaron McCabe, and Ryan Winkles.

Veteran Shakespeare & Company director Daniela Varon will direct the Bard’s most romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, with actor Finn Wittrock (a Lenox native who has performed with Shakespeare & Company previously, he is most well-known for his role on television’s All My Children) as Romeo. The three shows will run in repertory on the reconfigured stage, arranged as a thrust rather than a proscenium.
The 2011/2012 season will feature a number of veteran S&Co. actors and directors, including Jason Asprey, Elizabeth Aspenlieder, Kevin G. Coleman, Jonathan Croy, Jonathan Epstein, Nigel Gore, Malcolm Ingram, Dennis Krausnick, Corinna May, Annette Miller, and Kristin Wold.
In the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre, founding artistic director Tina Packer will be performing her Women of Will: The Complete Journey (Parts I-V), directed by Eric Tucker and featuring Packer’s acting partner Nigel Gore. The same trio debuted the work, which offers audiences a chance to share in Packer’s forty-plus years of exploring the plays of Shakespeare, during the 2010 season. British playwright Shelagh Stephenson’s poignant comedy The Memory of Water will be directed by Kevin G. Coleman (S&Co. director of education) and feature audience favorites Elizabeth Aspenlieder, Corinna May, Annette Miller, and Kristin Wold. Tina Packer will portray the witty and outspoken newspaper columnist in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins by Margaret Engel and Allison Engel. And the popular Lunch Box Shakespeare series presents one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, directed by Dennis Krausnick (director of training, actor, and playwright) and featuring the Performance Intern Company.
Next fall and winter (2011-2012), three shows will be performed in the Bernstein Theatre: the award-winning The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow, a witty film-noir comedy featuring four actors playing between 100 and 150 roles; the critically-acclaimed production of The Santaland Diaries directed by Tony Simotes and featuring Peter Davenport will return; and Moliere’s classic farce The Learned Ladies directed by Tina Packer. “We wanted to bring our audience members a season of light, love, comedy, and hope, and so we are rousing up some of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies, romances, and one of the greatest love stories in the canon,” says artistic director Tony Simotes. “I am also very excited to bring titles that are new to the company, which will be performed in the Bernstein Theatre. It is my hope that this robust, thought-provoking, and even controversial selection of plays will ignite conversation and stir the imagination.”
