ANTIQUES: Late-Nineteenth Century Hock Glasses
In the late-nineteenth century, small wine glasses with round bowls, often made of colored glass and embellished with ornate
details, were manufactured specifically for drinking hock—a now-outdated term for German Riesling, a dry white wine from the Rhine valley. These delicate hock glasses (set of ten, $2,450) with green bowls and contoured stems, were made circa 1900 by Fritz Heckert Glassworks, known for producing fine Bohemian glassware with hand-gilded and hand-painted enamel details. Decorated with gold vines and lively pink flowers, the graceful goblets make delightful additions to an enchanting summer table. [JULY 2010]
