IN THE GALLERIES: Drawn Closer

Pastels by Lenox, Massachusetts, artist Andrew DeVries

The three-dimensional bronze sculptures by Andrew DeVries can be found, paused mid-dance, on many Berkshire lawns and in numerous public areas, but within DeVries Fine Art International in Lenox, Massachusetts, a pastel rainbow of dreamlike colors pays tribute to his earliest interest: impressionism.
Though smaller in scale than their hefty bronze counterparts, the pastel nudes by DeVries are equally impressive—with detail just as precise, and the form of each female figure just as elegant. The sweeping curves of lovely ladies reclining on backgrounds of tropical azure, fiery orange, or indulgent purple help to accentuate their sensuality, which DeVries portrays so intuitively.
So whether drawn by the charm of DeVries’s infectious laugh, familiarity with his bronze works, or a curiosity for the artful juxtaposition of his substantial statues and vibrant canvases, visit (or re-visit) his studio early and often. (MAY 2009)
